Costume Gala Institute 2011
This year the Costume Gala Institute is celebrating the works of the late and great Alexander McQueen at the Met, New York with the theme of the occassion based around his work.
The ball was filled with the Fashion Elite including Karl Lagerfeld, Anna Wintour and the most talked about female designer of the past week, Sarah Burton. Needless to say, it was a glamourous event and the outfits were stunning to say the least. Many celebrities chose to wear Alexander McQueen, in keeping with the event however TellusFashion can also confirm that the fashion stakes were running high with the likes of the Olsens in Givenchy and Dior respectively, Gwyneth Paltrow and Hailee Steinfeld in Stella McCartney, Crystal Renn and Christina Ricci both looking amazing in Zac Posen and the ever stylish Alexa Chung wearing Christopher Kane. My favourites however, had to be one of my biggest style influences Florence Welsh in Yves Saint Laurent and Leelee Sobieski in Vionnet.

Caught Royal Wedding Fever
So I admit that lately I’ve not been entirely overwhelmed or interested in the Royal Wedding… but I appear to have finally caught on to what all the fuss is about – mostly because I am so excited to see what the latest iconic royal wedding gown will look like. Here at TellusFashion, we have been listing the endless possibilites of what Kate Middleton will be wearing tomorrow (I feel strongly in my heart that it has to be and probably will be McQueen). However, I began to think about the true meaning behind the Royal Wedding dress…
To those who may not consider Fashion to be something of a major significance in their lives, they might not realise why the fashion crowd are making such a fuss over this dress but I am here to tell you that there is a lot more to it than just looking like a beautiful princess on the day… its about defining an era.
In general we define specific eras in time by historic events, music and fashion. If you look at specific garments in particular, most people would generally relate them to an era in time – flares (70s) mini skirts (60s) shoulder pads (late 80s). We might not like them now but they are definitely part of our history and help you to associate with everything that was surrounding them at the time.
So its here that I reitirate, just how significant this dress will be tomorrow. This is a dress that will stand the test of time and will be something that won’t be looked upon as “timeless” but will be representative of how we are today. I am extremely curious as to how this unknown and no doubt extremely nervous designer (Sarah Burton, I know its you!) has translated this modern era into this iconic dress. I think there will be a lot of Kate’s personality in the dress, but I hope it will be something a little unexpected. I see Kate Middleton as a classic, elegant person, however I kind of hope that the dress rebels against the traditional a little and truely marks the change in the Royal Succession.
My alarm is set, and I am definitely gearing myself up for something amazing! I can’t wait!

Who Will Design Kate’s Dress?
With the Royal Wedding getting closer and closer, the question in all fashionista’s minds is: “Just who is designing Kate Middleton’s dress?”
Well the answer to that question is far from being revealed, leaving the anticipation for Friday even greater. So who are the potential labels in the running to be the royal wedding dress designer of the decade?
Sophie Cranston.

A major contender for the role, Sophie Cranston is the brains behind Libelula. She has previously won the 1999 Designer of the Year Award and went on to work with the likes of Alexander McQueen. Libelula, meaning dragonfly in Spanish, was created in 2002 and uses bold colours and prints on well cut, flattering clothes.
Bruce Oldfield.

Bruce Oldfield is a famous British designer best known for his bridal designs. He graduated from Central Saint Martins College of Art in 1973. In the past he designed many outfits for Princess Diana, making him a strong nominee for the wedding designer. In 1990 he was a awarded an OBE for his contribution to the British fashion industry.
Jasper Conran

Jasper Conran was also awarded an OBE for his contribution to the British fashion industry. Over his 20-years in the business he has successfully designed a popular Debenhams range, many women’s and menswear lines, as well as china and crystal for big brands. His signature designs revolve around the cut and silhouette of the clothing line. He also designed Princess Margaret’s daughters wedding dress in 1994.
Sarah Burton

A popular choice for the princess’s designer. Sarah Burton took on the role of Creative Director for Alexander McQueen after his death in 2010. She managed to produce a great first collection and has been rumoured to have designed the royal dress for the past few months.
Daniella Helayel

Designer of the label Issa, Daniella Helayel is said to be Kate’s favourite designer. She has also bagged herself an invite to the wedding, could this mean she is the one? Her signature style is bright and feminine.
Alice Temperley

Kate’s sister was seen in this Alice Temperley’s shop recently, arousing suspicion that this could be the royal designer. Her label launched in 2000 for London Fashion Week and has since become more and more prestigious. The label specialises in wedding gowns for brides, bridesmaids, mothers of the bride and guests.
Philipa Lepley

Philipa Lepley is one of the bookies faves. Her bridal business began in 1988 in South Kensington and business has been booming ever since. Her designs often appear in top bridal magazines.

The future (fashion) queen of England
Following speculation last week that Sarah Burton, creative director at Alexander McQueen may be designing the wedding dress, critics have been prompted to ask, just how stylish is Kate Middleton?
The question is well timed as a £650 Burberry trench she wore this week sold out in 24 hours, and the dress that originally caught Prince William’s eye in a university fashion show has gone under the hammer at auction, selling for a staggering £78,000. Although the future princess has been seen leaning away from more traditional styles to contemporary designers such as Alice Temperley, pieces chosen by Kate Middleton are universally snapped up by the public.
Despite her ability to champion young British talent, Kate is usually seen in classic styles more suited to a royal-in-waiting. When she visited St Andrews with Prince William last month she was snapped in a classic, but somewhat old for the young princess-to-be, two piece suit by Luisa Spagnoli.
This leads to the all important question – is Burton designing her wedding dress? Hilary Alexander, the Telegraph’s fashion guru, called the rumours ‘a bold and brilliant decision’. Although some have suggested McQueen’s penchant for the outlandish and exaggerated is a touch too much for a royal wedding, most have welcomed the suggestion. So now the public waits, for Waity Katie, to confirm the rumours which continue to circulate.

Sarah Burton’s Collection Stuns Audiences.
Sarah Burton was perhaps the woman with the biggest expectations thrust upon her shoulders. She is the woman that was famously handed the Alexander McQueen legacy, the woman that had to live up to huge standards and make the deceased Lee Alexander McQueen proud.
Here at Tellusfashion we believe she has done just that. And it is not just us that think this, many fashion critics across the globe agree. Her autumn/winter collection was showcased at Paris Fashion Week, and many acclaimed the likeness, and indeed the believed approval, of the collection to her predecessor.
The collection, entitled ‘The Ice Queen and her Court’ used shades of white, black and lilac, embodied onto the typical McQueen silhouette. Hand-loomed silks, wool tweeds, animal fur, velvet and organza adorned the collection, giving this icy show a softer edge to it.
The general thoughts on the collection were unanimous; she really had surpassed expectation. She is everything the late Alexander McQueen would have hoped for and possibly more in his successor.
And what is more, there are rumours that a certain princess has asked the McQueen fashion house to design her wedding gown. Things are sure going in the right direction for Ms Burton!
